Why isn’t there ever anything good on TV on Friday night?” Nancy asked, turning to Ginny and Liz. The three of them were sprawled out in the lounge of their suite at about nine o’clock.

Nancy stretched her legs out on the couch. She wouldn’t admit it to anyone, but she was hanging around the dorm because she was expecting Ned to call. If he left Emerson after his last class, he ought to be in Weston by now. So why hadn’t he called?

“There’s a law against good TV on Friday nights,” Liz said, pressing the remote, “because we’re not supposed to stay in on Friday night.”

“Hey, it’s not by choice,” Ginny said. “Can I help it if Malcolm is on rotation tonight?”

“Malcolm, is he the doctor you’re seeing?” Nancy asked.

Ginny nodded.

“You should see him, Nancy. He’s a hunk,” Liz said. “He should be on one of those TV series about doctors. He’s better looking than any of the actors.”

Nancy laughed. “Really? Wow!”

The telephone in Nancy’s room started ringing. Nancy jumped up and ran to answer it. Ned— finally! “Hello?” she said eagerly.

“Nancy! I’m so glad I caught you,” Carson Drew’s deep voice replied.

“Oh, hi, Dad,” Nancy said, trying not to sound too disappointed. “What’s up?”

“Not much. I just wanted to say hello,” he said. “I’m going to be in and out tomorrow, and I was afraid I’d miss talking to you over the weekend. So, how are things?”

Not too great, Nancy thought. She could tell her father about breaking up with Jake or her confused feelings for Ned. She could tell him anything. They were very close. But right now, she didn’t feel like talking in case Ned tried to call.

“Dad, I’d love to chat, but the thing is, I was just on my way out,” Nancy said.

“Oh, really? Of course, it’s Friday night. I forgot.” Carson laughed. “Doing something fun, I hope?”

“Oh, yeah. I’m, uh, meeting Bess and George,”

Nancy said quickly. “And I’d better run. I was literally halfway out the door when you called.”

“My timing’s lousy, as usual,” her father said. “Well, give me a call Sunday, okay?”

“Sure. Thanks, Dad. Bye!” Nancy hung up the phone, feeling slightly guilty. She wasn’t trying to avoid her father. It was just that she wanted to see Ned. She couldn’t explain why it was so important to her. Maybe because everything in her life had changed so much, she wanted to talk about it with Ned. He knew her better than anybody.

“Who was that?” Liz asked as Nancy walked back into the lounge.

“My dad,” Nancy answered.

Just as Nancy was settling back onto the couch, the front door to the suite opened, and Stephanie swept into the room. “Well, if it isn’t the Stay at Home Club,” she said. “What are you watching—‘One Hundred and One Ways to Knit’?”

Liz looked at her and raised an eyebrow. “And I suppose you were in New York City for the evening. You just flew back for an hour to share the details with us, right?”

Ginny laughed.
